Gregg's Landing residents to get east monument

It's been a long time coming, but the residents of the Gregg's Landing subdivision will be getting a new monument sign at the eastern entrance to the subdivision near Milwaukee Avenue.

Vernon Hills officials have tentatively approved plans for the new monument sign on the eastern median between the commercial and residential properties, just west of Milwaukee Avenue. Construction of the new sign is expected to begin in the spring of 2010.

An artist's rendering of the monument to be placed at the eastern entrance of the Gregg's Landing subdivision.

Don Kathan, president of the Gregg's Landing North Homeowners Association, said that the two western entrances to Gregg's Landing at Butterfield Road each have had decorative monuments for years, but for some reason the developer of the subdivision never made a provision in its master plan for an eastern monument off of Milwaukee Avenue.

"Now, after more than two years of negotiation with the village of Vernon Hills, the residents of Gregg's Landing will finally be able to enjoy an east monument which solves this shortcoming," he said.

Village officials initially had concerns about the location and size of the monument sign in the center median of the roadway, fearing it might block motorists' vision.

However, the monument has been reduced in width by removing brick end pillars that were part of the original design, Kathan said.

Kathan said the project will be competitively bid and the exact cost of constructing the monument has yet to be determined. However, the homeowner's association has secured a $75,000 donation from the developers of Lowe's for the cost of construction.

Thanks to Lowe's for their contribution. Now, how about turning down the wattage on their shopping center lighting? And, turn the lights off during the day... going green!?
